Lothar Matthäus to take part in Beckenbauer Cup

As part of the club’s 125th anniversary celebrations, Bayern will be hosting a one-off legends tournament in honour of Franz Beckenbauer on 17 March 2025. After former wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry confirmed their participation at the start of this month, another former world-class player has also signed up: Lothar Matthäus! The 1991 World Footballer of the Year played for Bayern between 1984 and 2000, interrupted by four years at Inter Milan (1988-92). The captain of Germany's 1990 World Cup-winning side collected a total of seven German championships with FCB, as well as three DFB Cups and one UEFA Cup. The now 63-year-old made a total of 302 Bundesliga appearances for the German record champions, scoring 85 goals.

"I am very proud to be part of the FC Bayern Legends at this special event in honour of Franz Beckenbauer," said Matthäus. "I'm looking forward to the tournament and am excited to see my team-mates and friends again. Both as a friend and adviser and as a person, Franz Beckenbauer was always a personality who shaped me in a special way." Other players in the team, which will be coached for the first time by former Bayern captain and FCB legend Philipp Lahm, will be announced at a later date.

The indoor tournament at the SAP Garden in Munich will include teams of legends from Real Madrid, AC Milan Glorie, Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart and another top European team that will be confirmed in due course. All proceeds from the event will go to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation, which helps people in need.
