Following Bayer 04 Leverkusen's 1-1 draw with FC St. Pauli on Sunday evening, FC Bayern's lead at the top of the table has increased to eight points. The Munich giants had lain down a marker in the title race with their 4-0 win at 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday and have taken a decisive step towards their big goal of winning their 34th league title.
The German record champions and the reigning champions are engaged in a fierce battle for the Bundesliga throne this season. The two head-to-head encounters in the first and second half of the season both ended in draws (0-0, 1-1). The men from Munich moved into the top spot on Matchday 3 (!) and have refused to relinquish it ever since. At the beginning of the year, it became clear that the path to the Meisterschale would once again lead to a battle with the Werkself. Now, with just four matchdays to go, coach Vincent Kompany's team have managed to pull further ahead.
There are still 12 points up for grabs this season, and both sides face some tough opposition in the remaining fixtures: three of Bayern and Bayer 04's four upcoming opponents currently sit in the top half of the table.
