FC Bayern will face Flamengo in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup. Following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Benfica in the final group match, Bayern qualified for the knockout stages as runners-up in Group C. Flamengo had already progressed from their group D in first place. Bayern's encounter with the Brazilians will take place on Sunday, 29 June at 4pm local time (10pm CEST) at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Flamengo have made quite an impression at the Club World Cup with a strong start to the tournament. Following a convincing 2-0 win against Espérance de Tunis, Filipe Luís’ team added an unexpected 3-1 victory over English Premier League outfit Chelsea to secure first place in Group D with a game to spare. They finished with seven points after a 1-1 draw with Los Angeles FC, ahead of Chelsea on six.

Prior to the tournament, the Brazilians had been able to secure the services of former Arsenal midfielder Jorginho. Their top scorer this is Giorgian de Arrascaeta, who also contributed their first goal of the tournament against Tunis. Another well-known figure in Flamengo's squad is defensive boss Danilo, formerly of Juventus.
Many famous footballers have worn Flamengo colours in the past, including Zico, Romário, Vinícius Júnior and also Bayern legend Rafinha. It is only the second time in history that Bayern will face a Brazilian team in a competitive match. The Reds successfully overcame Cruzeiro in the 1976 Intercontinental Cup with a 2-0 win in Munich and a 0-0 draw in Belo Horizonte. It will be the first ever game between Bayern and Flamengo.
