Reaction to the game against FC Augsburg - Joshua Kimmich: ‘How we react is what matters’

FC Bayern suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in their home match against FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon. Although Bayern got off to a better start on matchday 19, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a header from Hiroki Ito, Augsburg turned the game around after the break. “We tried, but in the second half we didn't bring the energy onto the pitch,” concluded head coach Vincent Kompany. Joshua Kimmich saw it similarly, putting the focus on the week ahead: “We weren't quite as fresh and didn't find a consistent rhythm over the full 90 minutes. How we react to this is what matters, and I'm looking forward to that!” Bayern’s next opportunity for a win is already on Wednesday in the Champions League at PSV Eindhoven. fcbayern.com has compiled the rest of the post-match reaction.

Max Eberl, board member for sport: “The goal is always to win every game. Every game in the Bundesliga is complicated. We didn't manage to give 100 percent on the pitch today. Augsburg, on the other hand, did. Accordingly, they deserved to win and we have to congratulate them. We have to push ourselves to the limit in every game, which we didn't do today. We are, of course, in an intense period and have players out injured, but we still had a good team on the pitch. We have to look ahead and react as we have done in the past. We have to do that on Wednesday and Saturday.”

Vincent Kompany: “Congratulations to Augsburg. There are games where the opposition plays well, and we’re currently also in a very busy period of the season with five games in 13 days. I know from experience, that anything can happen in such periods. We tried, but in the second half we couldn't bring the energy onto the pitch. That gave Augsburg the chance to be dangerous. We've had a many, many wins here and often had reason to celebrate, but now we've lost, and we need to accept that. The hunger is always there; that's not the problem. Sometimes the performance on the day just isn't there. People often say that the Bundesliga is easy, but we know from our own experience that it isn't. We shouldn’t question everything now – we just need to accept that today wasn't our day. However, what we say here isn't decisive; what matters is our reaction on the pitch. That's no guarantee, but we know what we have to do."

Joshua Kimmich: "We have to accept that we lost today. It wasn't undeserved. Augsburg didn't outplay us, but a win for us would have been just as undeserved. To a certain extent we lacked a bit of hunger, we weren't quite as fresh, and we didn't find a consistent rhythm over the full 90 minutes. Augsburg were more aggressive than us playing out from the back. Of course, we always want to win, especially at home, but how we react to this is what matters. We'll be thinking about this defeat for a few days, especially why and how. We didn't create chance after chance; we simply didn't reach our top level. The important thing is that we respond to this and I'm looking forward to that!"

Harry Kane: “We played decently in the first half. I think we deserved to take a 1-0 lead, and we also had moments when we could have, really, secured the win already. The final touch wasn't quite right, the final pass was missing, and the goalkeeper made a few good saves. And at 1-0, the game is always open, no matter who you're playing against – you can be punished for it. In the second half, we lacked a bit of energy, we weren't as fluid on the ball. Respect to the opposition: they put us under more pressure and made it difficult for us. It was a tough period with a lot of games, but ultimately, it's on to the next one quickly, we're now looking ahead to the Champions League.”

Jonathan Tah: “Losing is never fun. We're disappointed, but the most important thing is how we respond to it, how we quickly put it out of our minds, focus on the next game and respond on the pitch. In the second half, we didn't manage to match the energy level that our opponents brought to the pitch. We lost, and we need accept that. We want to take the anger we feel now and bring it onto the pitch in the next game and show our quality and energy again.”

Reaction from the Augsburg camp

Manuel Baum (head coach, FC Augsburg): “The first thing we discussed in the dressing room was that we shouldn't let ourselves be influenced by the hype that will inevitably surround a game like this – but the reverse is also true. I believe you should always try to stay level-headed. It's okay to celebrate once in a while, especially because you get to do it only rarely in life.”

Finn Dahmen (goalkeeper, FC Augsburg): “Not just me, but what the other ten outfield players and also the lads who came on as substitutes achieved today was incredible. We started extremely bravely, played a lot of long balls at the beginning and then kept trying to work our way through with short passes. Everyone simply put on a strong individual performance. In the end, it was above all courage which saw us through. We played a very good first half, then fell behind 0-1 unnecessarily and said to ourselves: Okay, we'll keep going the same way, we believe in it. And that's exactly what we did. I'm simply very, very proud.”

Arthur Chaves (centre back, FC Augsburg): “I'm very happy right now. I can hardly find the words to describe my feelings because I had a really tough season at Hoffenheim and now I'm getting a second chance. I have to be honest: I just jumped up and it was a bit of luck. But luck is also part of it. I'm very happy because the lads brought an incredible amount of energy onto the pitch. I think it's important to play with energy.”
