Reaction to Wolfsburg match – Vincent Kompany: ‘I like that we always keep going’

Bayern certainly did their bit to melt away the icy temperatures in Munich as they scored six goals in a blistering second-half display to beat Wolfsburg 8-1 on Sunday evening. “It’s what we wanted on a cold January day to get us going,” said captain Manuel Neuer afterwards. Head coach Vincent Kompany was just as pleased with his team’s efforts, adding, “It’s those moments where we’re 5-1, 6-1 or 7-1 up but keep going, keep pressing and trying to score more goals. I really like that.” fcbayern.com rounds up the reaction to the Matchday 16 fixture at the Allianz Arena.

Reaction to the match against Wolfsburg

Vincent Kompany: “It’s not normal and a given. The first half really wasn’t easy. I said that Wolfsburg are good going forward and don’t need many chances. We saw just that in the first half. I always felt we were close and that more chances would come when they got a bit tired. And that’s exactly what happened in the second half. And we took them. It’s those moments where we’re 5-1, 6-1 or 7-1 up but keep going, keep pressing and trying to score more goals. I really like that. And then there’s the mix of the youngsters coming on and showing what they can do, but we don’t lose that Bayern face.”

Manuel Neuer: “That felt really food. It’s what we wanted on a cold January day to get us going. It came off and we’re all very happy. Every player in our team is important, and you can see that. Everyone who comes on wants to be a spark, wants to give the team and the game something. We always play to score. You can see that in the result, that we don’t stop playing or just manage things, but that we go for the next goal. We try to show our best game, and you see that from the first minute till the last.”

Tom Bischof: “It really isn’t easy to beat Wolfsburg or manage such a big win in general. I just think we really wanted the win, were more up for it – and we did that very well. I think that was the key thing. It was harder at the start. And then we wanted to kill the game off at the start of the second half, which we did with a couple of goals in the first 10 minutes, which made the game easier for us. I think we did that well. And obviously everyone’s really happy to have a win like this in the bag now.”

Reaction from Wolfsburg

Primin Schwegler (sporting director): “The first half was okay. We can build on that. But not what we showed in the second half. If you come away having lost it 6-0, then there wasn’t much that was good. And that was the case here. There were too many simple goals. A complete collapse. We made far too many mistakes.”

Daniel Bauer (head coach): “The bottom line is it’s a very, very disappointing and very, very painful defeat. We need to apologise to our fans for the second half, who made to much effort to come and support us in this weather. We had two different halves. I think in the first we showed what we intended to do. We showed a lot of how we want to play. We were brave and implemented our game plan almost 100 percent. We need to do better with the chances we had in the first half, with the free shots from the edge of the area. You don’t get many chances against a team like Bayern. You need to take them better. The goals we conceded in the second half were sometimes far too easy.”

Kilian Fischer (defender): “I think the first half was decent from us. We had a few chances today to take the lead. We actually wanted to play the same way in the second half, keeping up the pressure, looking to win the ball back. And then we just made a poor start to the second half, conceded two quick goals. But you can’t then fall apart the way we did. An 8-1 loss is truly embarrassing.”
