A Munich Lad at FCB
Diego Armando Valentin Contento was born on 1 May 1990 in Munich as the son of Italian parents – he was named after Argentine football legend Diego Armando Maradona. In 1995, at the age of five, he joined the FC Bayern youth setup, to which he would remain loyal for 19 years. His two older brothers, Vincenzo and Domenico, also came through Bayern’s academy. After progressing through all the youth teams, Diego moved up to the reserves in 2008 and scored his first goal on his professional debut in the 3. Liga against Kickers Emden. On 13 January 2010, the left-back finally signed his first professional contract with Bayern – a moment he had envisioned for years.
From Treble Hero to Champions League Winner
Within the space of ten days in February 2010, Diego Contento made three debuts for FC Bayern’s first team: in the DFB Cup, in the Champions League (against Fiorentina) and in the Bundesliga (against 1. FC Nürnberg). In April 2010, he even started in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Lyon. With FC Bayern, the Munich-born defender won three German championships (2010, 2013, 2014), three DFB Cups and crowned his time at the club in 2013 with the historic treble of Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League. In 2014, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup followed. In the 2012 Champions League final against Chelsea, Contento was in the starting line-up – a match that he and Bayern still remember vividly to this day.
A Life in Red and White
In 2014, after 19 years at the club, Diego Contento left FC Bayern and moved to Girondins Bordeaux in France’s Ligue 1, where he played for four seasons. His path then led him back into German football with Fortuna Düsseldorf and SV Sandhausen, before he ended his playing career in March 2023 at the age of 32. For Contento, FC Bayern was more than just a club – it was his sporting home, a part of his youth and his identity. Today, the Munich-born defender is part of the FC Bayern Legends and stands as a special example of how a homegrown youth player can make it all the way to the very top.
