World Champion on the Way to FCB
Paulo Sérgio Silvestre do Nascimento was born on 2 June 1969 in São Paulo and discovered his passion for football as a child on the streets of the metropolis. At 13 he joined the youth ranks of Corinthians São Paulo, turned professional at 18 and celebrated the Brazilian league title in 1990. In 1993, at the age of 24, he took the leap to Germany to join Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where over four seasons he became one of the key forwards for the Werkself. During this time, in 1994 in the USA, he was crowned world champion with the Seleção – the greatest moment of his career. In 1997, Paulo Sérgio moved to Italy to join AS Roma before Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge brought him to Munich in 1999.
The Super-Sub of Old Trafford
Paulo Sérgio wore the FC Bayern shirt for three seasons. In 125 competitive matches he scored 34 goals for the record champions and won two German championships (2000, 2001), the DFB Cup in 2000 and two League Cups. His most important contribution in a Bayern shirt came in the second leg of the 2001 Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford, when he scored the decisive 1–0 against Manchester United just nine minutes after coming on and paved the way to the final. On 23 May 2001 in Milan, he stood on the San Siro pitch with his teammates as FC Bayern won the Champions League again after 25 years – the Brazilian, moved to tears, celebrated the greatest title of his club career.
The Samba Touch
With his acrobatic back‑heel goal against PSV Eindhoven in September 1999 – voted Goal of the Month – Paulo Sérgio provided a perfect example of what defined him as a footballer: creativity, flair and Brazilian lightness. In 2001 he crowned Bayern’s year with the Intercontinental Cup triumph in Tokyo. In 2002 he left Munich for Al‑Wahda in Abu Dhabi and wound down his career in Brazil with EC Vitória. After hanging up his boots, Paulo Sérgio worked as a South America scout for FC Bayern and later as a TV pundit in Brazil. Today he serves as a pastor in his homeland and, with both World Cup and Champions League titles to his name, remains firmly in the hearts of FCB fans as a true club legend.
