From FC Augsburg to the Bayern Goal
Raimond Aumann was born on 12 October 1963 in Augsburg and began his footballing career with Stadtwerke SV Augsburg, before moving to the youth ranks of FC Augsburg in 1976. In 1980, FC Bayern München brought him to Munich as an under‑19 goalkeeper – the start of a connection with the record champions that continues to this day. In 1982, Aumann was promoted to the first team as the fourth goalkeeper. In the years that followed, he engaged in a fierce battle for the number one spot with Belgian world‑class keeper Jean-Marie Pfaff, before finally establishing himself as first choice after Pfaff’s departure in 1988. His international breakthrough came in December 1988 at Milan’s San Siro, where a brilliant performance from him secured Bayern’s place in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
Six Championships and a World Cup Title
Twelve seasons, 216 Bundesliga matches, 268 competitive games in total – Raimond Aumann defined an entire era in the Bayern goal. He won the German championship six times with FC Bayern (1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1994), lifted the DFB Cup twice and the DFB-Supercup twice. From 1992 to 1994 he led the team out as captain. In 1990 he was part of Germany’s World Cup squad in Italy as reserve goalkeeper, where the team captured the world title. In 1994, the goalkeeper nicknamed “Balu” was named Goalkeeper of the Season by Kicker sports magazine. After the signing of Oliver Kahn, Aumann moved to Beşiktaş in Istanbul in 1994, where he also won the Turkish league title in 1995.
The Link between Club and Fans
After the end of his playing career, Raimond Aumann returned to FC Bayern and became an institution off the pitch: for 27 years he served as fan liaison officer and head of the fan and supporters’ clubs department – a vital link between the club and its supporters. No one has shaped this area more sustainably: from modest beginnings, he built a professional fan organisation that is now seen as a model across European football. In 2023, Aumann moved, at his own request, to the FC Bayern Legends. For over four decades, the Augsburg native has worn the club’s red and white – as goalkeeper, as captain, as fan liaison officer and now as a legend.
