Via Spain to Munich
Rudolphus “Roy” Antonius Makaay was born on 9 March 1975 in Wijchen in the Netherlands. After starting out at Vitesse Arnhem, he took the step to Spain in 1997 to join CD Tenerife and moved on to Deportivo La Coruña in 1999, where in his first season he played a major role in securing the club’s first league title. Makaay’s breakthrough as a world-class striker came in 2002/03, when he scored 29 goals to win Europe’s Golden Shoe. His hat-trick at Munich’s Olympic Stadium in the 2002 Champions League group stage against FC Bayern finally convinced Uli Hoeneß: in the summer of 2003, Makaay was signed by the record champions for what was then a club-record fee of 18.75 million euros.
The Phantom with a Striker’s Instinct
For four years, Roy Makaay was the phantom of FC Bayern – a striker who could remain invisible for long periods before striking with deadly accuracy at the decisive moment. In 189 competitive matches he scored 103 goals for the record champions, including 78 in the Bundesliga. With Hitzfeld’s and later Magath’s Bayern, he twice won the double of league title and DFB Cup (2005, 2006), as well as the 2004 League Cup. His most spectacular moment came on 7 March 2007: in the Champions League round of 16 against Real Madrid, Makaay scored after exactly 10.12 seconds to make it 1–0 – still the fastest goal in Champions League history. He also netted FC Bayern’s 3,000th Bundesliga goal on 21 August 2006.
Leaving a lasting Impression
After the arrivals of Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose, Roy Makaay returned to his homeland in 2007 to join Feyenoord Rotterdam, where he ended his playing career in 2010. This was followed by over a decade as a youth coach at Feyenoord and a spell as assistant coach at Glasgow Rangers. In 2023, Makaay returned to the record champions as head coach of the FC Bayern World Squad, where he trains young international talents – passing on to the next generation the instincts that define a world‑class striker. As a member of the FC Bayern Legends, the “phantom” remains closely connected to the club.
