FC Bayern beat Mainz 4-0 on Wednesday night to progress to the DFB Cup round of 16. Jamal Musiala was the hero of the day, bagging a hat-trick in the first half, with Leroy Sané netting the third of the four goals.
Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Eric Dier, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in defence. João Palhinha and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Sané, Musiala and Serge Gnabry, with Harry Kane as the target man. Thomas Müller and Mathys Tel replaced Musiala and Kane at half-time, with Leon Goretzka, Raphaël Guerreiro and Arijon Ibrahimovi ć coming on for Kim, Davies and Dier in the second half.
Hat-trick for Musiala
Bayern hit the ground running and Gnabry saw an effort saved inside 60 seconds, but they took the lead with barely two minutes gone when Davies found Kane, who invited Musiala to beat keeper Robin Zentner. Munich had a good shout for a penalty waved aside when Musiala was upended in the box before Zentner parried a Sané effort, with Gnabry hitting the post on the rebound.
FCB loanee Armindo Sieb tested Neuer and Zentner denied Sané, with Anthony Caci hitting the side-netting. Bayern eventually doubled the lead when Kane saw a header saved and Musiala was quickest to react and nodded home. The 20-time cup winners added a third late in the half following a textbook counter, Sané firing past Zentner after Davies led the charge. Vincent Kompany's men banished any last lingering doubts on the stroke of half-time, when Musiala capitalised on a mix-up in the box following Laimer's cross to round off his hat-trick.
Cruise control
Kompany made changes at the break and Bayern eased off after half-time, but they were always a step quicker than their opponents. Zentner denied substitute Müller before Neuer proved equal to a Karim Onisiwo shot. Zentner made a good reaction save to keep out Goretzka's header and also repelled a Palhinha effort before Guerreiro fired over. There were no further goals as Bayern booked a berth in the next round.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. They will learn the identity of their next cup opponents on Sunday.
