Bayern through to DFB Cup second round

FC Bayern progressed to the second round of the DFB Cup with a 4-0 victory over SSV Ulm on Friday. Thomas Müller handed Bayern a two-goal lead early in the game and Kingsley Coman added a third with ten minutes to go before Harry Kane rounded off the final scoreline in stoppage time.

Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Josip Stanišić, Minjae Kim, Dayot Upamecano and Raphaël Guerreiro in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Mathys Tel, with Müller up front. Kane, Coman, João Palhinha, Michael Olise and Alphonso Davies took over from Musiala, Tel, Pavlović, Gnabry and Upamecano in the second half.

Brace for Müller

Bayern enjoyed much more of the ball throughout and were rewarded for their dominance when Stanišić's long ball found Kimmich, whose square invited Müller to tap in. It was a similar pattern three minutes later as Kim's pinpoint pass found Gnabry, who squared for Müller to double the lead.

Vincent Kompany's men settled into a rhythm now. Guerreiro fired wide and Musiala saw a shot blocked before a Kimmich pass only just evaded the unmarked Müller. Ulm's Maurice Krattenbacher - on loan from FCB - fired wide on the break as Bayern went into half-time two up.

Subs stretch lead

The home side got a grip after the break and stifled many moves. A Tel shot was deflected wide and Kim miscued a header from a corner. Dennis Chessa mishit the ball under pressure from Upamecano at the other end.

A Coman shot was deflected behind, but Bayern put the game to bed with ten minutes to go as Kane's diagonal found the charging Olise, who invited Coman to tap in. Kane's header added the final flourish as Bayern booked a berth in the second round.

Bayern will learn the identity of their next DFB Cup opponents on 1 September, with the matches to be played on 29-30 October. The Bavarians will be back in action on Tuesday, when they take on Grasshopper Club Zürich in a friendly before travelling to face Wolfsburg in their opening Bundesliga match next Sunday.
