It will be a celebratory matchday at the FC Bayern Campus for FC Bayern Women tomorrow. Following the final home game of the season against Eintracht Frankfurt (kick-off 15:45 CEST), captain Glódís Viggósdóttir and her teammates will receive the Bundesliga trophy in front of the fans. The Munich girls have already secured the fourth league title in a row and eighth in the club’s history. The first German championship came 50 years ago and that will also be remembered before kick-off, with president Herbert Hainer and director Bianca Rech honouring the heroes of 1976. The class of ‘76 have been specially invited to this match to celebrate this anniversay with the current team.
Women’s football has been played at FC Bayern since the start of the 1970s, when it was still banned by the German Football Association (DFB). “The players from that time were pioneers, who paved the way for all future generations,” said Hainer. “The championship of 1976 was the first milestone on this long journey, and we’re proud of how women’s football at FC Bayern has evolved since then.”
The club is also taking the anniversary of the first success on 20 June 1976 as an opportunity to delve deeper into its history. On 20 May, an exclusive members event will take place at Clubheim *1900, where Hainer, Rech and players past and present will discuss the theme of ‘Over 50 Years of Success on the Field – Pioneers, Professionals and Perspectives Between Resistance and World-Class Excellence’, hosted by TV pundit and former FCB goalkeeper Kathrin Lehmann.
Saturday’s programme at the FC Bayern Campus will be rounded off by information and campaign stands, such as the one from ‘Red against Racism’; among other things, visitors can test their knowledge of diversity in a quiz developed specifically by the FCB initiative.
FCB Women will be bidding farewell to these players at the end of the season:
