First acid test: FC Bayern entertain Lyon

FC Bayern kick off the new season when they entertain Olympique Lyon on Saturday. Vincent Kompany’s men take on the French side at the Allianz Arena in the first pre-season friendly at 15:30 CEST.

The FC Bayern players had three weeks off after the Club World Cup exit against Paris Saint-Germain. Munich have been preparing for the new season since the beginning of the week. After the mandatory medical tests and performance diagnostics, Harry Kane, Michael Olise & Co. have completed three training sessions so far.

Now the first out of three acid tests ahead of the Supercup final against VfB Stuttgart (16 August) awaits them. New signing Luis Díaz will be in the squad for the friendly against Olympique. After joining the German record champions from Liverpool, the Colombian has been with the team since Wednesday.

The opponents: Olympique Lyon

FC Bayern against Olympique Lyon – the fixture has a long tradition in European football. The teams have crossed swords twice in the Champions League semi-finals (2010 and 2020), with FCB advancing to the final each time. Munich and the seven-time French champions have faced off in ten Champions League matches, with Bayern winning six, drawing two and losing two games.

Lyon made it to the Europa League quarter-finals and finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season to qualify for the Europa League again. The new club management recently avoided forced relegation. Former Bayern player Corentin Tolisso is part of their squad. The 2018 World Champion wore FCB colours from 2017 to 2022, winning five German championship titles. He was part of the club’s sextuple-winning team.
