Olise shines as Reds win first friendly

Michael Olise looked the liveliest player on the park as Bayern, fielding different teams for each half of their opening pre-season friendly against Olympique Lyon, made a winning start to the 2025/26 campaign. A 34,500 crowd on a rainy afternoon in Munich saw a goalless first half, but Olise opened with a 53rd-minute penalty, before doubling his and his team’s tally nine minutes later. The men in red are next in action at 18:30 CEST next Thursday, 7 August, against Harry Kane’s former club and Europa League holders Tottenham Hotspur in the Telekom Cup 2025.

Bayern bossed the show in the early stages, but Lyon posed a threat on the counter-attack. The first chance came on 11 minutes when Coman and Guerreiro combined down the left before setting up youngster Lennart Karl for a well-hit volley that fizzed narrowly wide.

Five minutes later fellow talent Paul Wanner shot over the bar from a promising position, but the visitors had a first sight of goal when Moreira ran at Kim but shot wide, before the Portuguese striker warmed Manuel Neuer’s gloves for the first time after 21 minutes. Corentin Tolisso then took aim against his former club but his long-distance hit sailed off target.

Diaz debut after the break

Colombian superstar Luis Díaz was among the 11 new faces sent out by Vincent Kompany for the second half, and the new signing swiftly made his mark by drawing a foul from Clinton Mata and winning a penalty. With Kane off the field, Olise snatched the ball and converted to hand his side the lead on 53 minutes.

It was all Bayern for a spell now, and Serge Gnabry found Olise in the box nine minutes later, the Frenchman completing his brace with a neat low shot. Gnabry then set up Diaz, but the Colombian saw his effort stopped Lyon as keeper Descamps made a great save.

Lyon enjoyed a brief good spell after that, Kumbedi rushing through on 68 minutes one-on-one with Jonas Urbig who made a strong save, before Mikautadze cut inside from the right but hit the post ten minutes later. Alejandro Rodríguez finally pulled one back with a shot into the low right corner of the net after 83 minutes.

That rounded off the scoring as Bayern completed a deserved victory, and Kompany used the opportunity to field 22 players in a match situation at the start of an intense preparation period.
